Why sweep a chimney?
- To remove soot, loose lining, nests, birds and squirrels,
as well as any built up cobwebs. - To check what purpose the chimney can be used for
(if the chimney has been recommissioned). - To check if an old gas liner is still in situ. This must be
removed before any appliance is fitted. - To check for loose rubble, bricks and old loose mortar.
- To stop soot falling.
- To prevent chimney fires.
Chimney fires are not an effective
way to clean a chimney. Chimney fires damage the
brickwork and crack the chimney pot. - To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Sweeping a chimney is the way to clean and assess the
state of the chimney. If necessary, recommendations
can be made.
All chimneys, after sweeping, are certificated to
show that they have been professionally swept
and if they are safe for use
