The AJ Coles chimney sweeping team is committed to
providing a comprehensive cleaning service, including
considerations for the health and safety of our clients. With
this in mind, every fireplace undergoes a full inspection,
from hearth to cowl. We will inspect the fireplace and
chimney for blockages, loose rubble, insecure bricks
or old mortar. Additionally, we perform tests for
smoke problems and carbon monoxide.
Smoke Testing
There are two types of smoke tests:
First is simply to check that the smoke goes up the
chimney and is not coming back into the room.
The other smoke test is an integrity test, which ensures
the integrity of the chimney, ie. leakage into other
rooms or properties. This test takes longer. With this,
a full report is completed and a copy given to
the customer.
Carbon Monoxide
Poisoning Check
Carbon monoxide poisoning is caused by inadequate
ventilation or by appliances that have not been
maintained correctly.
Inadequate ventilation is caused by a problem with
the chimney due to a full or partial blockage, or
deterioration of the structure of the chimney. It
is, therefore, advisable for the chimney to be
swept on a regular basis (at least once a year).
It is also advisable for all types of appliances to be
regularly checked and maintained for safety by a
competent engineer.
Carbon monoxide is a gas that is odourless and
tasteless. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be
fatal or your health can be permanently damaged.
Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include
tiredness, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, chest
pains and nausea.
